Before You Buy a New CMM: Read This
Buying a new CMM should be simple. You pick a brand, pick a size, buy the machine, and start measuring parts.
In reality, most regret comes from buying the right machine but the wrong system. Costs and headaches show up later through software, probing, installation, environment, and long-term support.
Use this checklist before you sign anything. It will save you time, money, and rework.
1) Define what “success” looks like for your CMM
If you cannot define success, the salesperson will define it for you.
Answer these in writing:
- Largest part you will measure in the next 24 months (not just today)
- Tightest tolerance you must verify confidently
- Your throughput target (parts per day, per shift)
- Your reporting needs (FAI, PPAP, customer templates, GD&T requirements)
- Who will run the machine (CMM programmer, operator, hybrid)
- Where it will live (lab, controlled area, shop floor)
2) Stop shopping by brand and start shopping by fit
A “better” CMM on paper is not better if it does not fit your environment and workflow.
Common mismatches:
- Lab-grade accuracy goals in a shop floor environment
- Buying a huge machine for rare parts and wasting cycle time on small work
- Underbuying travel and ending up with workarounds and re-fixturing
- Choosing a system that requires a full-time programmer when you do not have one
3) Understand the real accuracy drivers (not just brochure specs)
Specs matter, but real-world accuracy is driven by the whole setup.
Ask about:
- Temperature requirements and compensation strategy
- Foundation and vibration sensitivity
- Air quality requirements
- Probe strategy and qualification routines
- How performance is verified after installation
If your tolerance is tight, your environment and process matter as much as the machine.
4) Software is a bigger decision than most people think
Software determines how fast you get value from the CMM.
Before you buy, confirm:
- Which software platform you will run
- Licensing model (node-locked, dongle, floating)
- Required modules (GD&T, scanning, reporting, offline programming)
- Training plan and time to competency
- Ongoing maintenance and update expectations
If you buy a new CMM with “whatever software comes with it,” you are gambling with productivity.
5) Probing and accessories can change the total cost dramatically
This is where budgets get quietly inflated.
Clarify what is included:
- Probe head type (manual, motorized, indexable)
- Touch trigger vs scanning needs
- Stylus kits and extensions for your part families
- Probe racks, reference spheres, qualification artifacts
- Fixturing approach for repeatability
A new CMM without the right probing is a machine that cannot do the job you bought it for.
6) Installation is where the project succeeds or fails
A lot of companies underestimate install complexity.
Get clear answers on:
- Who handles rigging, placement, and leveling
- Air, power, and network requirements
- Site readiness checklist before delivery
- Post-install verification and documentation
- Timeline to first measured part, not just “delivery date”
You are not buying a box. You are buying a measurement cell.
7) Service and support should be evaluated like insurance
New CMMs still require calibration, verification, and occasional service. Downtime is expensive.
Ask:
- What response time looks like for service calls
- Parts availability for the controller and probe system
- Calibration and verification options
- Support for programming, training, and optimization
- What the warranty actually covers and what it excludes
If support is weak, your “new” CMM becomes a bottleneck.
8) Demand a day 1 plan, not a quote
Before you buy, your supplier should be able to explain exactly how you go from purchase order to producing reports.
A real day 1 plan includes:
- Site readiness and installation scope
- Software installation and licensing confirmation
- Probing configuration and qualification process
- A sample program strategy for your parts
- Verification steps to confirm performance
- Training plan for operators and programmers
If they cannot map this clearly, you are signing up for avoidable chaos.

A new CMM is a major investment, but the machine is only one part of the system. The winners plan around environment, software, probing, installation, and support before they buy.
